The Rotary Club of
New York
Fellow Rotarians,
The speaker at our next meeting on January 21st
will be Joseph W. Belluck, who specializes in product litigation. He was instrumental
in settling New York State’s tobacco lawsuit for $25 billion. You can read more
about Joseph Belluck in the latest Weekly Bulletin on our website at www.nyrotary.org/Bulletin/bulletin_01-21-2003.pdf
(click on the link).
Peter Brizard has written a good Reporter of the Week (in the
Bulletin) about our last meeting. Peter has been a member since 2002 and his
classification is Independent CPA Accountant – Trusts and Estates.
You can read in the Bulletin about our new member Anders Eggen. He
is a Principal and Portfolio Manager at Halcyon/Alan B. Slifka Management
Company LLC, which manages in excess of $2 billion. Welcome to our club Anders!
The Bulletin informs us about the Charter Ceremony for the new
Interact Club at the New Rochelle High School on February 5 at the Davenport
Club. We are all invited to the event.
The bulletin wishes happy birthday to Joe Groveman on January 22, Gerry Hamilton on January 22 and Thomas Kass on January 23. Happy Birthday to all of you!
Marine Veteran Lou DiPaolo, who took pictures
from our January 7th meeting, has also taken pictures at our January
14th meeting. You can see Lou’s pictures www.nyrotary.org/meet_our_members/lou_dipaolo/photos_1-14-2003/index.html.
Our District Group Study Exchange Program (GSE) is
getting increasing interest from young professionals to apply as Team Members.
Paul Rothstein, who is in charge of applications, told me that his son Eric
sent out a message to his friends, who are age 25-40. Eric’s message was
approximately as follows (I have made it more universal):
My father’s Rotary club is sponsoring up to
four professionals age 25 - 40 to go to four countries in Southern Africa from
May 5 to June 6. The four people will be matched up with people in the
same profession in each of the four countries. It's for exchanging ideas
etc. If you are interested, contact Paul Rothstein at redstonepsr@optonline.net.
Also, feel free to send this to people who you think may be interested.
It may be the case that some employers will allow the exchange to count as
work, similar to conferences. You can find out more about GSE at www.nyrotary.org/GSE7230/index.html.
Paul told me that he received a number of responses as a
result of his son’s message. If you have children age 25-40, I suggest you ask
them to send the same message to their friends.
Last
week, I wrote about the strong camaraderie between Rotarians all over the
world. Another manifestation of this is the following message from Past
District Governor Larry Lunsford.
Matts -
How I enjoy continuing to receive these
bulletins, and how pleased I am that you are the GSE Chair for your
District. Please say hello to the Rotary Club of New York Rotarians for
me.
PDG Larry Lunsford
District 6040 (Missouri)
Larry
together with PDG Bill Schuck made history in our legendary club on December 4th,
2001 when they and visited us with a $97,000 donation to our World Trade Center Disaster Fund
from three districts
in Missouri. You can read more about it on our website at
www.nyrotary.org/wtc_disaster/wtc_disaster_page.htm.
Monica
Beltrametti sent us the following message from France about her daughter:
Matts,
My
daughter Viviana will graduate from Barnard College (Columbia
University) in May this year and after that she would like to find a job
for a year related to human rights before she goes to law school. I attach her
resume. I would be very grateful if you could forward it to Rotary Club members
that could help her.
Best
regards and thank you so much in advance for your help.
