The Rotary Club of
New York
Fellow Rotarians,
Our next
meeting will be Fellowship Day with ourselves as speakers. We can speak to each
other, about our businesses, our ideas, our committees, and ourselves. There
is more information about Fellowship Day in the latest Bulletin on our website
at www.nyrotary.org/Bulletin/bulletin_02-25-2003.pdf.
Ann Creo wrote the Reporter of the Week in the
Bulletin about our last meeting. Ann has been a member since 1999 and her
classification is Banking Commercial Lending. Ann is Vice President at Citi
Group, Private Bank. I enjoyed reading
Ann’s description about the visitors from the Oklahoma City Rotary Club. I am
sorry that I was not there to meet them. In typical Rotary fashion, they came
to make up at our club. Since the World Trade Center Disaster on 9/11, there is
a special bond between the Rotary Clubs of New York and Oklahoma City. The
Rotary Club of Oklahoma City was also the biggest single contributor to our
club’s 9/11 Fund with a $100,000 contribution.
Our Board of Directors has approved two more membership proposals.
They are for Mitchell Nichtberger and Christian Baumer. You can read more about
them in the Bulletin. Welcome to our growing club Mitchell and Christian!
You can read in the Bulletin that Robert Van Wateren celebrated
his birthday on February 22nd. Rob has been a member of our
legendary Rotary Club since 1980. His classification is Real Estate Development
and his is the President of Newconn Developers, Ltd. Happy birthday Rob!
There is a write-up in the Bulletin about Past District Governor
Paul Caruso started out as a member of the Rotary Club of North Shore, Staten
Island in 1985. He transferred to our club last year. You can read more about
Paul on our website at www.nyrotary.org/meet_our_members/paul_caruso/paul.html.
He recently helped rescue people in a building fire that took place on Staten
Island. You can read about it on our website at www.nyrotary.org/meet_our_members/paul_caruso/fire.html.
District Governor Nominee Don Lee, is also the Chairman of the
Youth Services Committee. Don asked me to inform you about the special
three-day District RYLA Retreat for young adults from around the district on
March 21-23. You can read about it on our website at www.nyrotary.org/ryla/ryla_retreat_2003_02.pdf.
RYLA also has a website at www.rotaryryla.com/.
Our Rotaract Club has been very successful with the preparations
for their Global School Link Fundraising Party at Turkish Center, 821 UN Plaza,
2nd floor (46th St & 1st Ave) on Friday
February 28th, 8PM – 11 PM. Rotaract President Elect Ozge Saritosun
sent me a me a message saying that they have 89 RSVPs, including District
Governor Bob Benson and South African Consul General Ivan Vosloo. If you would
like to come to the party, you can reach Ozge at ozge_saritosun@yahoo.com.
Maybe she can squeeze you in, even though the RSVP deadline has expired.
I also told you last week about Chuck Katze’s return
from South Africa and District 9250 on behalf of our Group Study Exchange
Project. I have since received the pictures from the trip. You can see them on
the Group Study Exchange website at www.nyrotary.org/GSE7230/chuck's_trip.html.
Because of the snow storm last week, we have extended the deadline
for Group Study Team Member and Team Leader applications one extra week to
March 7th. We have been receiving GSE applications,
but we need more. You can find out about the Group Study
Exchange Program on the GSE Website at www.nyrotary.org/GSE7230. You can also download
the application forms there.
Executive Director Andreas last week received a
phone call from Ron Schoenmehl at the Rotary Club of San Diego to inform
Andreas about the passing of Dan O. Henry. He was Past President of the Rotary
Club of New York 1970-1971. You can read about Dan on our website at www.nyrotary.org/past_presidents/dan_o_henry/index.html.
District Governor Bob Benson recently sent out
the following plea for help:
I really need your help on this one. Any of
you who can give any amount of time on Saturday March 1st to help get the
school desks in a container going to South Africa please let Janet DiBenedetto
know at 914-923-6110 or 914-773-7376. Most of the heavy work will be done by
professional movers, but we need to have extra hands just to move the desks out
to the container which will be along side the current place of storage, Please
let Janet know so we can organize to get this job done.
Thanks in advance,
Bob Benson
District Governor
